The meeting was held May 11, 2010 at the library at 5:35 PM. In attendance: Pat Heiges, Gerrie Beck, Bette DuBois, Jackie Hamblet, Linda Hastings, and adjunct member, director of library services, Kathy Van Deursen.
The minutes of the March meeting were read and accepted with the following correction:
The book selection for August had not been decided, but MONIQUE AND THE MANGO RAINS had been discussed, and was selected as the book for August 10 at the May meeting.
Treasurer’s report: As of April 12, the balance is $5,499.65.
The treasurer, Jackie, completed the Annual Report Certificate for the state and gave a copy to Gerrie and Linda for safekeeping. It was voted to accept the report.
Librarian News: Kathy has been posting items on the Librarian’s Corner of the web site.
One Book : One Valley. The book, GO WITH ME by Castle Freeman has been selected as this year’s book. The event will be held November 4. Kathy is looking into a adjunct program to fit the suggested them of “Bully and/or Heroes”. She would like to coordinate a program with the school librarian and have the students involved in the event. This adjunct program will be held in October. The book club will discuss the book at the meeting October 12.
“Reads to Go”: Kathy investigated the possibility of purchasing, THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG for the Friends to buy a “Reads to Go” kit which would be borrowed by other libraries and groups for their book clubs. This title has been taken but the Friends can purchase MUDBOUND or THE RELIABLE WIFE. It was voted to purchase MUDBOUND by Hillary Jordan. This kit must contain 14 trade paperbacks and one large print book. The state offers to purchase the books for $180. but the Friends would like to give the business locally to White Birch Books and it was decided to purchase the books from them if the cost is not more then $200. An audio book was suggested and the group will decide later whether to purchase one , depending on the price. Kathy will inform the state library of the Friends decision to purchase the book kit and will investigate the price from White Birch Books and place the order.
Sorting donated books: Beverly Sarapin has sorted several cartons of books and it is so much help to Kathy that a request will be distributed by e-mail and on the web site requesting volunteer help with this task, on an as needed basis.
Summer Reading Program: Beverly Sarapin has been organizing this and is looking for volunteers to read on Tuesday mornings this summer and to do a very simple craft with the children. The reader selects a book from the library or one he thinks would be appropriate, and reads the book and does a 5 or 10 minute project.
The group voted to give Beverly $50 to use for refreshments or other items needed for the summer reading program.
Humanities Programs: Gerrie posted a review of the LOOK TO THE MOUNTAIN PROGRAM on the web site. There were 20 people in attendance, including four men. Jackie has sent in many press releases to the Conway Sun but it has not been advertised in the paper. She has emailed the information and hand delivered it with no success. The librarian will select and organize a Humanities program for September.
Web site: (bartlettpubliclibrary.org) Gerrie has been working on this and keeping it up to date. She gave handouts to the Friends with an explanation of what is available and how to access and input information. She suggested that the Board members try to send a message to the Friends Board to see how to do this. At this point Jackie, Gerrie and Kathy have general access to the web site and will remain the only three, unless someone else has a need for access and then they will be given a password.
Because the library has free family passes for Squam Lake Science Center and the Remick Museum, Kathy suggested that the web site have links to these sites to promote usage of the passes. Believe in Books asked for a link to them and their next event, a walking for literacy type event, Trail Walk Through the Woods to benefit Books for Babies held on May 29. Jackie will be participating and would like to have anyone interested join her to represent the Bartlett Library. The Friends were in agreement to the request to make the information from Believe in Books available on our web site.. Gerrie can “EBlast” people to inform them of new information on the web site.
Book Sale: Will be held on the same day as the parade, traditionally on July 4. Kathy will check to be sure this is the correct date. A request will be made to drop off books on Friday, July 2. Kathy will ask Marcia Burchstead to contact the Country Picker and ask them to deliver the books they have saved since last year. The trustees may be willing to help on the sale.
Programs and book selections: THE LACE READER by Brunonia Barry will be discussed June 8 and Beverly will lead the discussion. There are plenty of books available.
GARDEN SPELLS by Sarah Addison Allen will be July 13 and MONIQUE AND THE MANGO RAINS by Kris Holloway will be August 10. Gerrie will put this information on the web site.
Jackie distributed posters for June book club.
Bette would prefer not to organize refreshments anymore. A new system is needed. A sign up sheet was put out at the book club and Jackie signed up for June 9 and Nancy Nelson for July 13.
Flatbread: The next date is September 7. Colleen will work on having the necessary information on the banner, Jackie will make posters to hand out at the August book club meeting, Gerrie will put the information on the web site and Linda will complete the application and submit press releases.
Meeting dates: Judy suggested that we return to the monthly meetings for continuity and planning. Since we traditionally do not meet in July or August, it was decided to make that decision at the meeting September 14. The group seems happy to continue to have the meetings immediately before the book club on the second Tuesday at 5:30.
The meeting adjourned at 6:50. The next meeting will be on June 8 at 5:30.
