Please join us on Tuesday, 10/11 at 7:00 pm for our discussion of Night of the Living Rez by Morgan Talty.  Morgan Talty, a member of the Penobscot Nation debuts with a riveting collection about what it means to be Penobscot in the twenty-first century and what it means to live, to survive, and to persevere after tragedy.  In twelve powerful stories, with humor, insight and compassion Talty tells the tales of family and community as they struggle with an uncertain future and painful past.  “A collection that examines the consequences and merits of inheritance, Night of the Living Rez is an unforgettable portrayal of an Indigenous community and marks the arrival of a standout talent in contemporary fiction”.  Books are available in the library.

Mark your calendars for THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27th when the author will be on stage at the Majestic Theater in Conway with Laura Knoy, writer, speaker, journalist and former public radio talk show host.  For more information go to onebookonevalley.org

Veterans Day Tribute – 11/8 at 7 pm. The World Played Chess by Robert Dugoni (Barry is back!)

Please join us and our favorite and regular Veteran’s Day discussion facilitator Barry Jandebeur on Tuesday, 11/7 at 7 pm.  We will be reading and discussion The World Played Chess by Robert Dugoni.  Called a “fearless and sensitive coming of age story” the novel tells the story of Vincent Bianco who has just graduated high school in 1979. He hopes to spend his summer before college earning some money for beer as a laborer on a construction crew. Working alongside two Vietnam vets, one suffering from PTSD, Vincent gets the education of a lifetime. Decades later as he prepares for his own son to go off to college, the lessons of that summer―Vincent’s last taste of innocence and first taste of real life―unfold in a novel about “breaking away, shaping a life, and seeking one’s own destiny”.  Copies of the book are available at the library.

Digging into Native History in NH – Sept., 13th at 7:00

Digging Into Native History in New Hampshire

Please join us for this special program from New Hampshire Humanities sponsored by the Friends of the library.  “Abenaki history has been reduced to near-invisibility as a result of a conquering culture that placed little value on the Indian experience, and a strategy of self-preservation that required many Abenaki to go “underground”, concealing their true identities for generations to avoid discrimination and persecution.  Robert Goodby reveals archaeological evidence that shows their deep presence here, inches below the earth’s surface.  This educational program will heighten awareness of the Native condition in advance of the One Book One Valley Read, Night of the Living Rez by Morgan Talty.
